Wild Salmon

Five of the seven existing Pacific salmon species spawn in our rivers and streams. Here are a few of the different fish species and their many names.

Tlingit Haida English and Latin

táa’un Chinook Salmon, Oncorhynchus tshawytscha: also king, Tyee, spring, or black mouth
L’ook táay Coho Salmon, Oncorhynchus kisutch: also silver salmon
Gaat sgwáagaan Sockeye Salmon, Oncorhynchus nerka: also red salmon, blueback, and (landlocked) kokanee
Téel’ sk’ak Chum Salmon, Oncorhynchus keta: also keta, dog, and calico
Cháas’ ts’at’áan Pink Salmon, Oncorhynchus gorbuscha: also humpback or humpy
X’wáat’ tayang Rainbow Trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss: also steelhead (Aashát)
X’éitaa
táatl’aat Cutthroat Trout, Oncorhynchus clarki
X’wáat’ táatl’aat Dolly Varden, Salvelinus confluentus: also bull trout
Saak íinaang
Pacific Herring, Clupea harengus pallasi
Yaaw sáaw Eulachon, Thaleichthys pacificus: also hooligan
