Let’s Get Southeast Alaska Off Diesel and on Renewables!

Do you Share SEACC’s Vision?

We envision an energy future where Southeast Alaska communities are meeting their current and future demands for affordable energy and have moved off diesel generation, except for emergency back-up. As individuals, we focus on energy conservation and efficiency in our homes and businesses. Policies and rate structures are in place that meet the needs of residents and commercial users without attracting potentially-polluting heavy industrial users.  Strong laws protect consumers and ensure that utilities conduct business responsibly, transparently, and in the public’s best interests. Our communities are self-reliant due to sustainable, reliable, renewable energy sources.

Energy conservation is key! In the short-term and the long-term, energy conservation pays off. As Juneau has demonstrated, our communities can cut the kilowatts while keeping our local economies strong. Let’s thank our state legislators for their leadership in providing more state money for energy efficiency rebates and weatherization programs – energy efficiency results in energy conservation and savings.

Get All SE communities off diesel! Kake has great wind power potential, and SEACC has long supported a southern intertie route from Petersburg to Kake.  SEACC is joining with others to help make Angoon’s long-promised hydropower a reality. Helping our communities break the tie to diesel generators should be a top priority.

Support Responsible Hydro!  SE Alaska has great potential for small scale hydro projects to meet community needs.  By developing projects close to communities, we can avoid miles of expensive overland transmission lines. To reach existing power grids, submarine cables are best, and the state should support technology to make these cables more economical.

Export of Power?  Export of clean renewable power from other sources might be possible one day, but first let’s get Alaskan communities off diesel. We also need to make sure developments are responsibly constructed and operated. The Thomas Bay projects near Petersburg, for example, put an important recreation, commercial fishing, and tourism area at risk without providing a clear benefit to Alaskans.

Tidal! Tidal power has incredible potential - look at the water ripping through the Wrangell Narrows. We support exploring the potential of tidal power projects that do not harm our fish and other marine resources.

Sustainable Biomass!  Could sawmill or fish oil waste heat homes and generate power?  The City of Craig is heating several municipal buildings with sawmill waste.  We support re-use of clean wastes to meet our energy needs.

Go Renewable!  Coal and diesel, unlike renewable energy, are dirty energy sources.  Fossil fuels can emit mercury, sulfur, and greenhouse gas pollution. Despite claims that coal can be clean, the technology isn’t there, and coal is not an acceptable source for Alaska's energy needs.
