Virginia Lake, Madan

Located on the mainland by the snow-capped Coastal Range east of Wrangell and just south of the Stikine River, the 43,000 acre Madan timber sale project area includes Virginia Lake and Creek in the north, Madan Bay in the southwest and Moose Creek in the southeast.  All cutting units and proposed roads are located just over the ridge, south of Virginia Lake, one of the 65 “important” watersheds in Southeast Alaska according to  the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.  The Madan Roadless Area south of Virginia Lake contains unique karst and cave resources and is home to a healthy population of brown bears. These wildlands have high fisheries value, and provide a wide variety of hunting and wildlife viewing opportunities (moose, wolves, black and brown bears, mountain goats and waterfowl) and other readily accessible remote recreation opportunities.
