21st Century Tongass

What Does the Future Hold?

With the end of the long-term contracts, the Forest Service can finally begin to implement a responsible timber management program that safeguards the health of the forest and the ways of life that depend on this healthy forest. The Tongass remains a land of incredible beauty and wild riches. We have the opportunity to foster sustainable communities that grow in harmony with the natural resources of Southeast Alaska.
SEACC is working with local communities to protect natural resources and support sustainable economic development.

What is Sustainable Development?

It is renewable. It uses resources no faster than they can be replenished. In general, natural capital is conserved rather than depleted.

It is equitable. It is equitable among people and across generations. The future is not sacrificed for the present.
It is digestible. The by-products of production are re-usable, recyclable, or biodegradable.

SEACC supports an economy based on the traditional mainstays of fishing, tourism, recreation, subsistence, and a value-added timber industry with a logging level that doesn't destroy other forest resources or sacrifice the future of Tongass communities, as well as new high tech services and businesses.

What will a Healthy Economy look like?

A healthy economy must protect the health of the ecosystem upon which it depends. A healthy economy minimizes the export of raw materials and maximizes the manufacture of finished goods. A healthy economy manufactures and exports finished goods made from local materials. A healthy economy keeps more money cycling through it than an economy that quickly exports its dollars. A healthy economy contains a diversity of enterprises and revenue-producing activities.
