Commercial and Sport Fishing
Healthy forests are vital to the continued productivity of Southeast’s valuable wild salmon stocks. More than 90% of the salmon commercially caught in Southeast Alaska are spawned and reared in the streams and lakes of the Tongass. Commercial fishing and seafood processing form the region’s largest private industry. Commercial salmon fishermen pumped more than $87 million into the regional economy in 2006 from the harvest of the five species of native salmon.
