Hunker Down for Climate Change with Katie Ione Craney, an Online Art Night for Lynn Canal

Want to have fun fighting climate change from your living room? You're invited to Hunker Down for Climate Change, an online art workshop Thursday, May 14th at 7 p.m. SEACC will be hosting a virtual gathering where we can make art together, share that art to make an impact on climate change, and see friendly faces from Klukwan, Haines and Skagway, all in one online space!

We’re excited to offer this event in partnership with Katie Ione Craney, Katie is a mixed media artist living in Haines, where she uses scrap metal and found materials to explore human and non-human memory and survival in a rapidly changing landscape. Katie will help us transform found and recycled materials, like food packaging or beachcombed junk, into art that can tell a story. So get outside, pick up some trash, and save that thing you were about to throw away because on the 14th you’re going to put it to good use!

When a crisis strikes — whether it's coronavirus or climate change — it can feel overwhelming, and it’s OK to feel loss or isolation in these times. But we also feel hope when we see our communities organize overnight into mutual aid and mask sewing groups. We believe art can be a way to embrace these contradictory feelings, to find truth and create meaning. Art is also a way to connect with ourselves and others, building the resilient community we need to weather these storms. There’s no better metaphor for transforming crisis into creativity than turning litter into art!

Participants will have the option to share a photo of their art to a portfolio SEACC is gathering to show Senator Murkowski how important climate change is to our communities. So we hope you'll grab your favorite art supplies and RSVP to join us for a night of art and community on May 14th! After you sign up, you’ll receive an email with a link to the event and more information about what we have in store.

See you there,
Matt and Katie
